The Dragons

The Tamworth Rugby Dragons are a team of boys aged 11 or 12 years (Year 7) from Tamworth and the surrounding area including Warwickshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands and Leicestershire.

The team meet for training on Friday evenings (5-6:30pm) and Sunday mornings (10-11:30am) and the focus is to develop the children's physical, social and mental well-being within a safe and fun environment.

Rugby is an accessible game for boys and girls and everyone is given an equal chance to participate. The team also enjoy social events and activities throughout the year.

What's Involved?

Training

Training takes place on Friday evenings (5:00 - 6:30pm) and Sunday mornings (10:00 - 11:30 am) at Tamworth Rugby Club U12s Pitch.

Parents remain pitch-side during each session.

Kit & Equipment

The team will provide all the sports equipment for your son and daughter including a training kit and match-day kit,

You will need to provide boots and a gum-shield.

Costs

The Rugby season runs from September - May each year and the subs cost a total of c. £140 for the whole season which includes insurance, kit and training.

We offer a free four week trial to all children interested in playing rugby for the first time.

Children can join at any time in the season.

Safeguarding

All our coaches hold Enhanced DBS checks and have first aid training and a first aid kit at all training sessions and fixtures

Fixtures

During the Season (September - May), we play other U12 teams across the region about twice a month. These games take place at home or away and are on Sunday mornings usually starting about 10am.

Parents are required to transport their child to away games which may involve a drive of 20-45 minutes.

For U12s the games are 'friendlies' and there are no leagues or scores recorded. This does not minimise the children's desire to perform well and earn their post-match hotdog which is a staple of rugby fixtures!

Parents & Grandparents

Parents and Grandparents are very welcome to attend training and fixtures at home and away. RFU rules state that spectators must be at least 3m from the pitch at all times.

The ethos of Rugby means that respect is a critical value we instil in the children.

So we love to hear encouragement from supporters of their child, their team and the opposition to celebrate all the children taking part.

The coaches - who are all parents themselves - are also available at the end of every session for a chat or receive feedback.

Governance

The Dragons play Age Grade Rugby which is the officially sanctioned game of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in England.

Our coaches also referee the games to these rules.

Games are also a key element to training and skill development and players are taught to respect the referee and their fellow players.

Progression

Age Grade Rugby is a well organised and structured progression of the skills and rules of Rugby from U7 to U18 level.

Each year the rules are adapted to build upon the scaffolding of learning from previous years. However, due to its accessible nature, children who may have missed earlier years are in no way disadvantaged and can start at any time.

Because Rugby is very much a team sport, boys and girls very quickly learn the game.

At the end of the season, the U10s become the U11s and the team and coaches move forward together.
